Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act all year long. Ranger David Sagan led a guided cross country ski trip through the Wilderness Area on Sunday Jan. 26th. The group connected with nature as only the sounds of skies gliding across the snow and the beautiful chorus of birds played in the background. Along the trip there were scenic rest areas that overlooked large expanses of cattail marsh and pockets of mature forest. Some of the highlighted sightings along the way were a pileated woodpecker, two red fox, dark eyed junco, and a downy woodpecker just to name a few. It was a perfect day to spend in the woods reflecting on how important areas like Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge are to wildlife and people.
