The Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge Friends group, the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society, hosted the annual "Take A Kid Fishing" event on the refuge on June 1, 2013.

The event featured special fishing for "kids and friends" in a pond normally closed to fishing plus many other activities conducted by volunteers. There were fishing contests, fishing games and crafts, and free fishing tackle, bait, and a hot dog lunch provided by the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society.

Refuge volunteers gave fishing lessons to those new to the sport and loaned poles to youngsters who didn't have any. A light rain kept most of the crowd away but the fish were biting and, by afternoon when the weather finally cleared, approximately 200 people were estimated to have attended the event.
