Back in early September, the Sunshine Preschool of Tok, AK decided that it would be fun...and educational...to visit Tetlin NWRs Migration Banding Station. Sure, what a great idea! We'd never had a group that young visit before and little did our staff know that we would be dealing with a totally new experience...car seats! Yes indeed....we managed to cram 7 car seats in our Refuge van and head off on a birding adventure. The "students," although very young, more than made up in enthusiasm and interest what they may have lacked in experience and knowledge. We all totally enjoyed ourselves...kids, staff and parents. Watching those smiling, exuberant faces as they saw a Varied Thrush up close and personal are what memories and stewardship are made of. There were 3 banding staff, 2 parents and 2 EE staff (all adults) in attendance...perhaps a bit top heavy...but it worked so well that we'll have to do it again next year. It's days like that one that remind us why we do what we do!
