Eleven Youth Conservation Corps employees from south Texas area schools conducted tire pickup and inventory/stockpiling on the Monte Christo Tract of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The retrieval included 121 automobile tires, 85 semi-truck tires, and 12 tractor tires. The tires will be picked up and recycled by a local tire recycler that is using the tires to reclaim a quarry, after they have been schredded and mixed 50:50 with native soil. The cost of proper tire disposal has resulted in widespread tire dumping, often on refuge lands, in south Texas.
