On June 4, 2012, the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) eight week program for summer 2012 began. Four area youth, between the ages of 15-18, were randomly selected as crew members. This year's YCC crew consists of David Chavez, Drew Phelps, Raven Darmody, and Amber Barboza. Local area veteran, Chris Sheridan, returned for a second year as the YCC Group Leader. Work projects planned for this year's YCC program include: painting several refuge facilities, repairing concrete in an agricultural ditch, installing two ADA accessible benches and six interpretive panels, river clean up, and a myriad of other tasks. The youth will also receive approximately 40 hours of environmental education, such as a guided kayak tour on Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge, lessons on desert survival, and other activities. The summer 2012 YCC program ends on July 27, 2012.
