The Uvalde National Fish Hatchery’s Annual Fishing Derby took place on a beautiful Saturday morning on June 2, 2012. This event is held to celebrate our Nation’s National Fishing and Boating Week. The derby was open to children aged five through thirteen and families began lining up an hour before the facility opened. The children were very excited and happy as they were throwing lines, getting bites, and reeling in fish. Almost every child caught their limit of fish. In addition to the fishing, a raffle drawing was held and 16 lucky children won prizes. Hot dogs, chips, soda, and water were donated to the event and made available throughout the event. The numerous hours of planning and preparation are definitely worth it when you see the smiles and ketchup smears on the faces of the children.
