On May 21 the Coleman National Fish Hatchery mascot, “Landon the Salmon,” along with Motor Vehicle Operator, Jeff Freund , participated in the Anderson High School Relay for Life walk against cancer. Wearing the Landon costume at this event was Kayla Freund, daughter of Jeff Freund. During the event Landon walked two miles in 90 degree heat and was a great inspiration for those who were also participating. Overall it was a great event for a good cause. There were lots of fin shakes, hugs, and pictures with Landon the Salmon, for all the participants.

Landon was named last year during a naming contest held by Coleman NFH. The entries came pouring in from local area schools and made a tough decision for the committee of Coleman NFH employee judges. The winning name of Landon was submitted from Mrs. Falkenstein’s second grade at Buckeye School of the Arts in Redding, CA. As a reward for the winning the name Landon the Salmon paid a surprise visit to class to present them with the award, cookies, a gift certificate and bags of prizes.

Coleman NFH is located in Anderson California on Battle Creek, a tributary of the Sacramento River. The hatchery is open for self-guided tours seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to dusk. During the months of October and November guided tours are available for groups on spawning days. For more information please visit our website http://www.fws.gov/coleman/ or to schedule a tour please contact the hatchery at (530) 365-8622.
