FWS Aquatic Insect Exhibit at the 2010 Northern Arizona University Mountain Campus Science Day
Southwest Region, September 25, 2010
Print Friendly Version
Dave Smith, Wildlife Biologist with the Arizona Ecological Services Office, participated in the Northern Arizona University Mountain Campus Science Day as part of the City of Flagstaff's Festival of Science.  Numerous campus groups prepared and set up exhibits in the NAU Conference Center.  Dave and entomology students collected and prepared displays with live aquatic insects.  This exhibit was part of a larger live terrestrial insects exhibit presented by the Colorado Plateau Museum of Arthropod Biodiversity.  Kids were able to net aquatic insects from a large tank and place them into a shallow, white tray to observe their catch up close.  The highlight of the exhibit was the culinary offerings of fried crickets seasoned with curry and chocolate chip and mealworm cookies prepared by NAU graduate student Kim Whitley.  Kids lost their initial inhibition to insectivory when offered candy if they would try a fried cricket.
