Stalking Carp in Chicago
Midwest Region, July 20, 2010
Print Friendly Version

Columbia’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office completed another round of hunting for asian carp on below Lake Michigan. A crew of three spent several days in Chicago electrofishing the shipping canal above the last lock to the great lake.

Our crew was joined by 6 commercial fishing boats, researchers from Southern Illinois University, biologists from LaCrosse, Illinois DNR, Tribal biologists from Wisconsin and a dozen commercial fishermen. Crews shocked, stalked with sonar and fished with nets in an effort to determine the extent of the spread of carp after finding one in Lake Calumet the week before.

Despite all efforts, no additional asian carp were found. Continued monitoring including fixed sampling sites and this type of strike-force effort will continue in our pursuit to document the extent of invasion of these species.
