VFWO staff members Andrea Adams, Irma Barraza, Kate Eschelbach, Inez Lanns, and Colleen Mehlberg gathered up their gloves and headed out to Ormond Beach in Oxnard, Calif. on September 19, 2009, to “pitch in” and participate in the 25th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day (http://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/ccd/ccd.html). VFWO staff joined over 80,000 other volunteers throughout California this year to assist in the effort to remove marine debris from beaches, waterways and the Pacific Ocean. VFWO staff were particularly interested in assisting with the removal of microtrash at this location in Oxnard due to the high visitation of seabirds and other marine life to this area that might ingest it, including listed species such as the Western snowy plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) and California least tern (Sternula antillarum browni). While at the event, VFWO staff had time to spread the word with the public about why protecting this habitat is so important and hear about why and how members of the community enjoy this resource.
