Bosque del Apache is famous for its wintering sandhill cranes and snowgeese, but its summer migratory songbirds, humming birds, wildlflower and cactus blossoms make it truly a refuge for all seasons.

On May 14, the refuge became famous for quite another reason - it became the backdrop for an installment of the Food Network’s series Burger Nation.  Bobby Olguin, owner of Manny’s Buckhorn Tavern in San Antonio, NM, is already known for his famous Green Chile Cheeseburger, which was voted No. 7 in the country by GQ magazine in 2005, but on May 14, Olguin and a New York film crew traveled to Bosque to film a segment of Burger Nation featuring his famous culinary creation.

The Food Network was searching for the ideal location to film that would epitomize the desert and tastes of the Southwest, so the City of Socorro, the Socorro Chamber of Commerce, and the Friends of Bosque del Apache worked with network officials to host the segment at the refuge.

With its scenic desert vistas and blossoming cactus background, Bosque del Apache served as the perfect location for this particular segment. On filming day refuge staff, Friends, volunteers and members of the public hovered on the refuge plaza as birds flew overhead and burgers sizzled in the mid-morning sun.  The big surprise of the afternoon was an appearance by Food Network star Bobby Flay, who challenged Olguin for the title of Greatest Green Chile Cheeseburger as part of the show Throwdown! With Bobby Flay. Each of the Bobbys prepared a burger and judges in a blind test determined which was tastier. AND THE WINNER IS…..you’ll have to wait until Throwdown! With Bobby Flay airs on the Food Network on July 22 to find out!
