RM Weaver assisted the staff of the U.S. Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Idabel Chamber of Commerce in hosting the First Annual Red Slough Birding Convention in McCurtain County Oklahoma.  The four day event took place May 7-10, 2009.  There were over 40 avid bird watchers that attended the convention.  The attendees came from Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Arkansas, and as far away as England to attend the convention.  The participants at the convention were provided tours of Red Slough, Little River National Wildlife Refuge, Beavers Bend State Park, Grassy Slough, and the McCurtain County Wilderness Area.  The convention provided nightly programs on birds, dragonflies, butterflies, and flowers.  The keynote speaker at the convention was Dr. Dennis Paulson who provided programs on Dragonflies - Rainbow on the Wing and Birds on the Wind - The Life of Shorebirds.  The great diversity of birds found in the area provided many of the folks opportunities to add a life bird to their list.
