Middle Basin Pallid Sturgeon Workgroup Meeting
Midwest Region, January 29, 2009
Print Friendly Version
The Middle Basin Pallid Sturgeon Workgroup met 26-27 January in Blue Springs, MO.  The purpose for the meeting was to coordinate recovery activities for pallid sturgeon in the Missouri River below Gavin’s Point Dam.  The first afternoon of the meeting focused on issues of stocking, followed by second day of reports from state, federal and university resource personnel working on pallid sturgeon in the lower Missouri and middle Mississippi Rivers.  Pallid Sturgeon Recovery Team Leader George Jordan presented some information regarding an updated Recovery Plan for the species and also an update on actions being taken by the Service to list shovelnose sturgeon as threatened due to similarity of appearance with pallid sturgeon.  Hatchery updates revealed that 12 potential pallid sturgeon brood fish are being held at the Neosho National Fish Hatchery.  Use of these fish for progeny production is pending based on genetic analysis and a determination of their readiness to spawn.  The meeting was well attended with approximately 60 people in attendance over the 3 day meeting.
