Youth Hunt at Deep Fork NWR
Southwest Region, October 12, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge hosted its annual Youth Deer Hunt during the weekend of October 10 through 12, 2008.  25 youngsters with their guardians attended the orientation session on Friday afternoon and began hunting Friday evening.  The Friends of Deep Fork NWR provided a hamburger/hot dog dinner for all of the hunters and their guardians on Friday evening after the first hunt session.

The weekend hunt provided many trials for the young hunters.  The full moon, high temperatures and windy conditions combined to challenge the patience and skills of each of the young hunters.  Seven deer were taken from the Refuge during the hunt this year.

Even though not many deer were taken this year, Refuge Manager Darrin Unruh, stated, “The hunters were good spirited this year.  We didn’t have anyone complain about the conditions.  It’s just the luck of the draw and they all seemed to realize it.”
