Congressional Staffers Visit Laguna Atascosa NWR
Southwest Region, July 13, 2007
Print Friendly Version
On July 13, 2007, Refuge Manager Wallace met with the staff of Congressman Solomon Ortiz (Denise Blanchard) and Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo (Patricia Villarreal and 5 other staffers) and gave them a short tour of the Laguna Atascosa NWR, including the Bahia Grande Unit.  Wildlife Biologist Jody Mays gave the staffers a short powerpoint presentation on refuge issues (i.e., TNC land transfer on the South Padre Island Unit, sea turtle work, Bahia Grande Restoration Project, ocelot recovery on the refuge, land acquisition, habitat restoration, drought and water issues, etc.).  The staffers asked quite a few questions about ocelots during the presentation.  Congressman Ortiz's and Congresswoman Bordallo's staff were in South Texas as part of a delegation of the Natural Resources Committee's Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans to hold a formal field hearing  to examine coastal erosion issues in South Texas at South Padre Island.  The Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans is chaired by Congresswoman Bordallo.
