Presentation at Grazing Land Conservation Initiative National Conference
Southwest Region, December 14, 2006
Print Friendly Version

John Hughes of the West Texas Suboffice gave a presentation entitled Grazing Land Management and Habitat Restoration for Declining Wildlife Species:  Conflict or Complement? at the 3rd Grazing Land Conservation Initiative National Conference held in St. Louis, Missouri, December 10-14.  Mr. Hughes’ presentation sought to identify common goals shared by agricultural producers and conservationists, and highlighted the Service’s efforts to restore habitat for the candidate lesser prairie-chicken using incentives provided by the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and Private Stewardship Grant Program.  Although the presentation was well-received, Mr. Hughes indicated that many USDA personnel present at the meeting were not overly receptive to participating in conservation efforts for declining species.  Mr. Hughes recommends increased Service participation in the Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative to help alleviate this problem.
