Headline (title): National Wind Coordinating Committee’s Wildlife Workgroup Research Meeting

OKESFO Representative: Chris O’Meilia

Date(s): November 13-16, 2006

Location: San Antonio, Texas

Meeting attendees: State, Federal, NGO, and Wind Energy Industry; approximately 170 people

Executive summary of accomplishment: The meeting was packed with current wildlife research addressing many factors associated with wind energy development.  The topics ranged from pre- and post-construction research and/or monitoring for bird and bat collision mortality, methods and study design for current and future research, mitigation, risk assessment and adaptive management.  One significant gap in the presentations was anything addressing impacts to habitat, such as maybe occuring with grassland and shrubland species.  With such high attendance, there were great opportunities to network with a diverse set of meeting attendees.  An electronic symposium proceedings will be made available to futher distribute the information.

FWS programs involved: Migratory Birds, Federal Activities, Endangered and Threatened Species, Partners for Fish and Wildlife

External partners involved: The Nature Conservancy
