Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne took time out of his busy itinerary to tour the King Salmon Visitor Center on Labor Day, September 4, 2006.  Visitor Center Manager Michelle Franulovich and Refuge Manager Daryle Lons briefed him on the visitor center and the Alaska Peninsula/Becharof National Wildlife Refuge issues. Secretary Kempthorne had previously taken an aerial tour of Katmai National Park and Becharof Refuge and was in awe of the beauty of the area. Secretary Kempthorne spent close to an hour in the visitor center and later stated that he was very impressed by the center and how it is being managed.
