Hunting Permit Program
Southwest Region, September 8, 2006
Print Friendly Version

A new hunting permit program was initiated for the fall and winter hunting season.  To hunt waterfowl or small game on the refuge, hunters will have to obtain a Special Use Permit issued by the refuge office.  The permit is free but will require hunters to provide their name and address to receive the SUP and a harvest information card.  The past permit system only required hunters to pick up a hunt brochure from one of several locations on the refuge and keep the small permit included on the brochure in their possession.  This method provided no public use or harvest data to the refuge.

Hunters are able to receive their prermit in person at the headquarters office during normal business hours or by phone or e-mail.  To date, the program has worked smoothly and was designed with input from RO Visitor Services staff.

Changes in the hunting permit system will allow the refuge to collect hunter use and harvest data that has not been collected or available in the past.  This additional data will allow the refuge to monitor the hunting program and provide higher quality input on any management decisions or changes to the program.
