The Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge hosted the 14th Annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 10th. The event is co-sponsored by the Great Salt Plains Association and the Byron State Fish Hatchery. Seventy youngsters spent the morning fishing at Bonham Pond and 51 fish were brought in for measurement. Judges were Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's John Stahl and Alfalfa County Sheriff Charlie Tucker.

Trophies and fishing equipment were given as prizes to the winning fishers. Door prizes were given away throughout the morning. These included fishing tackle and other donations from local businesses. Participants also enjoyed free pop, candy bars and a grab bag! Salt Plains buttons and posters were available and the refuge provided nightcrawlers as bait.

Donors this year included United Supermarket, the Great Salt Plains Association and various private donors. Youth came from as near as Nescatunga and as far as Wichita, KS and North Carolina (we admit the N.C. kids may not have come JUST for the derby).
