KODIAK: Symposium Focuses on Living with Bears
Alaska Region, September 24, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kodiak Refuge Manager Leslie Kerr and Supervisory Wildlife Biologist Bill Pyle joined Nick Jans, author of ?The Grizzly Maze? and Alaska Department. of Fish & Game Biologist Larry Van Daele as featured speakers in a symposium about living with bears in Alaska. Organized by Kodiak College, the September 24, 2005, symposium included a screening of local filmaker Dave Kaplan's recent film Deadly Passion which, like Jans? book, focuses on the October, 2003 brown bear attack that killed Timothy Treadwell and friend Amy Huguenard in Katmai National Park.

The Refuge presentation wrapped up the formal talks by focusing on future challenges and opportunities. Actions to implement the Refuge's soon-to-be-final Comprehensive Conservation Plan were put in the context of the complex history of bear management and use. Recent and ongoing changes in public values as documented by the Service's 2002 bear viewing assessment were highlighted. Approximately 175 people attended the event.
