KENAI: Refuge Constructs New Educational Trail
10 Region, August 23, 2005
Print Friendly Version
A Student Conservation Association (SCA) high school trail crew, working for Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, recently completed a new hiking trail and boardwalk to the Swanson River. Located at the Refuge's Outdoor Education Center, near the juncture of Swanson River Road and Swan Lake Road, the new trail connects the Center to the Swanson River and provides great views of boreal forest and muskeg habitats with good wildlife viewing opportunities. Because of the wet nature of the area, much of the approximately 1/2 mile-long trail is of constructed walkways. The SCA crew was comprised of high school students from around the Country and most have just departed to return to their homes and the start of a new school year. The Outdoor Education Center consists of 6 sleeping cabins, a cooking/meeting building, outdoor campfire area, vaulted outhouse/toilets, parking area, and now the new hiking trail. The Center is available for use by school groups and others for educational purposes. For more information, or to reserve the Outdoor Education Center, contact the Refuge at (907) 262-7021.
