University of New Mexico Lab Groundbreaking at Sevilleta NWR

On July 6, over 75 individuals attended the University of New Mexico new lab groundbreaking ceremony at Sevilleta NWR. The new lab will be located adjacent to the existing University of New Mexico field station at the Sevilleta NWR headquarters. Speakers included: Senator Pete Domenici, UNM President Louis Caldera, TNC NM State Director Terry Sullivan, and FWS R2 Regional Director Dale Hall. UNM Vice President for Research Terry Yates introduced the speakers. Attendees included: FWS R2 NWRS Chief Dom Ciccone, AZ/NM Refuge Supervisor Gary Montoya, R2 External Affairs Assistant Regional Director Larry Bell, and Jose Viramontes, also of External Affairs.

The new facility will provide laboratory facilities for University and visiting scientists working on the refuge. During 2005, over 90 different research projects were occuring within the refuge boundaries.
