Izembek Refuge staff conduct tours when the Alaska State Ferry M/V Tustumena stops in Cold Bay en route between Homer and Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The ferry makes this stop once a month from April to October with Alaska Maritime Refuge's Doug Stuart serving as resident naturalist onboard the ferry. The Izembek tour is very popular but participants are normally limited to the 20+ seats on the Refuge mini-bus and two trucks used for the tour, so Doug holds a lottery to decide who gets to go. As expected, the July 8 ferry was packed with passengers competing to take the Izembek tour. Doug persuaded the ferry captain to extend his stay at Cold Bay so Refuge staff could conduct two back-to-back tours. With most Refuge staff out of town, Biologist Kristine Sowl and two seasonal biological technicians led two extraordinary tours for 52 passengers. As one might expect from the area's name, the sunny, warm and windless day was rare for Cold Bay. But wildlflowers and wildlife were especially abundant and passengers saw three brown bears, red fox, sea otters, harbor seals, and numerous birds. Everyone got great views of the bears and the stop at the Grant Point Observatory provided excellent photos of Izembek Lagoon.
