Wildlife Lovers of all Ages Learn How to Get a Job with the Fish and Wildlife Service
Alaska Region, March 12, 2005
Print Friendly Version
She was the youngest person looking for a job at the University of Alaska Anchorage's (UAA) Career Fair, yet the elementary schooler standing in front of the Refuge System booth knew exactly what job she was looking for, ?I want to be an ornithologist!? She had the clearest vision of her career path ? but the passion this girl demonstrated was evident throughout many of the students considering the Fish and Wildlife Service as a career choice. ?How can I get a job with the Fish and Wildlife Service?? ?I like animals, what kinds of jobs do you have?? ?I have an engineering degree. How can I get the experience to qualify for one of these cool wildlife jobs?? These and a myriad of other questions from over 200 people were answered by Maeve Taylor of Alaska's Visitor Services Division in an effort to introduce the Fish and Wildlife Service to our future job-seekers.

The UAA Career Fair on March 12th was a unique melding of high school and college students and the general public all looking for jobs. Interested applicants received current job and volunteer listings as well as information on how to navigate the usajobs.opm web site. While only a few Fish and Wildlife Service jobs are currently available in Alaska, the Career Fair was a prime opportunity to introduce students to the process of building education, volunteer, and job experiences to become well qualified for a Fish and Wildlife Service career. Students also received descriptions of the Youth Conservation Corps program for high schoolers and the Student Career Experience Program for college students. Every visitor walked away from the booth with the knowledge that something great is happening at national wildlife refuges ? and there just might be a chance for them to become a part of it.
