Turkey Release at the Pueblo of Santa Ana
10 Region, February 24, 2005
Print Friendly Version
External Affairs, NAL, participated in the release of 24 Merriam's turkeys (18 hens and 6 toms) on Santa Ana Pueblo lands on February 24, 2005. Radio-transmitters were attached to six birds and will allow Tribal staff to document movements and habitat preferences. The 24 turkeys were provided by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and were trapped near Raton, NM. This restocking effort is made possible by a 2003 Tribal Wildlife Grant from the FWS and will help the Pueblo to reestablish this culturally important bird to Tribal lands. This project is a successful partnership and involves the Pueblo, FWS, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, and the Wild Turkey Federation.
