Return of the Natives
Southwest Region, January 11, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On January 11th sixty-nine reproductively mature Federally Endangered razorback suckers were released into Pond 1 of the DU unit on Imperial NWR. Imperial NWR has been working with the Bureau of Reclamation and the Arizona Fisheries Research Office to mirror the natural habitat conditions of the Colorado River in the DU unit. The release of the reproductively mature fish is an experiment to see if the fish will reproduce in the man-made backwaters of the refuge. The fish were salvaged from the High Levee Pond on Cibola NWR and transported to Imperial NWR with help from the Arizona Department of Fish and Game and the Arizona Fisheries Research Office.
