Additional releases and monitoring of Tarahumara frogs in Arizona
Southwest Region, October 10, 2004
Print Friendly Version
On 10 October 2004, FWS and other personnel released 39 juvenile and 99 late stage tadpole Tarahumara frogs to Big Casa Blanca Canyon in southern Arizona. The release complements other releases of 248 frogs and 229 tadpoles that occurred in June and August of 2004. The June release was reported in a previous ARS report. FWS and Arizona Game and Fish Department personnel have been monitoring the releases. A variety of life stages and good numbers of frogs have been observed during monitoring. On 10 October, we observed small tadpoles that may have represented the first reproduction by released adult frogs. A note about the initial release authored by Jeff Humphrey of this office was published in the latest edition of the Fish and Wildlife News. The cover photo on the News, of a Tarahumara frog, was taken by Jim Rorabaugh of this office.
