IZEMBEK: Tours For Ferry Passengers
10 Region, July 16, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The July 16 arrival of the Alaska Marine Highway System gave numerous ferry passengers the opportunity to visit Izembek Refuge. Refuge staff used the 15 passenger shuttle bus and other vehicles to make two trips for a total of 44 ferry passengers to world famous Izembek Lagoon. Alaska Maritime Refuge's on-board Interpretive Specialist Doug Stuart persuaded the M/V Tustemena to spend extra time in Cold Bay for the extended tours. July and August are peak months for passengers from around the world who board in Homer and ride the State Ferry to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians. A lack of vehicles enables only half the ferry's passengers to join the tour, so Doug Stuart developed a lottery system for fairness. Mary Ann Kronk, manager of Alaska Maritime's new ?Islands and Ocean Visitor Center,? was also aboard the ferry to learn about the Aleutian Islands of her refuge and the southern Alaska Peninsula.
