The fifth season of mourning dove banding at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge ended with a total of 228 doves banded this year. This is a record breaking year for the refuge shattering our previous high of 172. For the fifth consecutive year Great Swamp NWR has banded more doves than any other location in New Jersey. As part of the state wide study the state provides the bands and bait while the refuge provides the volunteers and staff to run the traps on a daily basis.
This program is always a great draw for volunteers as the banding season provides interns and volunteers the opportunity to learn more about doves. This includes such things as how to determine the age and gender of captured birds.
