Connecting folks with nature happens on a personal level each year with the Wild Goose Chase. After a few setbacks the Friends of the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge and the staff of Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge were able to see the return of this event. The Wild Goose Chase is unique to the Tri-City area.

This 5k event takes participants out of their typical element of paved sidewalks and city streets and places them within nature. The Wild Goose Chase allows participants to run or walk (by category) their way through an off-road course that twists and turns throughout the scenic views of nature.

Prior to this event, the refuge put out a call for volunteers. The call was answered by local volunteers and friendly members of Cabela’s Inc. (Saginaw Team). Also, Mobile Medical Response, Inc. answered our request by sending a standby unit. In addition to an overflow of support, Puddles the Blue Goose, the mascot for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was there to lend assistance.

Typically the Wild Goose Chase offers male and female awards (1st-3rd) across 8 age groups. The top 3 (male and female) runners and top 5 (male and female) walkers are awarded also. This year there were 26 participants.

The timing was conducted by Miller Race Management.
