The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Stockton Fish and Wildlife Office (FWO) participated in the San Joaquin County Office of Education’s 16th Annual Dinner with a Scientist, held on November 14, 2013 at the Wentworth Education Center in Stockton, Calif. The dinner with a Scientist Program is a forum for local middle and high school students to interact with scientists from different disciplines.

Pat Brandes, a fish biologist with the Stockton FWO was one of thirty scientists attending the event. The event was attended by approximately 50 teachers and 150 students from San Joaquin County schools. Students and teachers were divided into small groups with one scientist at a table to ask questions and learn about science careers.

The students and their teachers switched tables three times before dinner and again, just prior to dessert, to talk with more scientists.  The program also included keynote speaker, Mr. Michael Cardenas, who spoke about his unique journey to become a scientist through adversity and perseverance. In addition, the program included a 20-question, science competition. The dinner with a Scientist program has grown beyond San Joaquin County, and events like it, are now being held in Merced, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne counties. The event, like years past, was a rewarding experience for scientists, teachers, and students.

Pat Brandes is a fish biologist at the Stockton Fish and Wildlife Office.
