San Bernardino National Wildlife refuge (NWR) was fortunate to be able to host a Pathways intern this summer. Rueben Mendoza, a student at Colorado State University, came to us in May for his first internship in the service. Unlike other interns the refuge has hosted, Rueben is a Fisheries Division intern. The Fisheries Division has their interns do cross-programmatic internships to provide them the opportunity to experience other divisions within the Service. Rueben was a valuable member of the staff, assisting with, or conducting on his own, many of the inventory and monitoring surveys the refuge conducts annually. Rueben also conducted a research project to assist management in determining habitat requirements and utilization, as well as fish size, time of year, and stocking densities to ensure survival.
