In August, as part of an ongoing refuge interpretive facilities overhaul, staff at San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) installed an interpretive panel at the entrance to the historic cemetery located on the refuge that served the San Bernardino Ranch when it was owned by Texas John Slaughter in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s. Many of the occupants of the cemetery were children of people that lived and worked on the ranch, but at least one of them was a horse thief that was killed during a gunfight with John Slaughter and his ranch hands.
