Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge Hosts Butterfly Count

Region 3, July 13, 2013

Jeff Belth, the author of a new field guide, The Butterflies of Indiana, led a group of six hardy volunteers  to conduct a butterfly count on Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refge on July 13, 2013.

In spite of temperatures near 90 degrees, the group found 21 species on the refuge. Although this count recorded the highest number of butterfly species on Muscatatuck since 2009, a concern was that only one monarch butterfly, a normally abundant species, was found. Results of the refuge, and other nationwide counts, are recorded by the North American Butterfly Association.
