On June 22, 2013 the Missisquoi NWR hosted our annual Fishing "derby". Over 85 children pre-registered for the event and with their families participated in a fun filled and educational fishing event on the refuge.

The "derby" is an open fishing day for children and their parents to encourage kids to learn about angling and aquatic habitats. Along with easy fishing access along the Missisquoi River the refuge works with volunteers to teach children about aquatic invasive species, angler ethics, fly fishing and tying and spin casting techniques. Thanks to the USFWS Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Office the participants got a special up close and personal look at sea lamprey, a species of management concern in the Champlain watershed due to its impact on fisheries in the lake.

Thanks to the Refuge Friends Group as well as a grant from Ben and Jerry's Inc, the refuge provided participants with fishing bait and a full lunch (including gallons of Ben and Jerry's ice cream) along with door prizes to help outfit the young anglers for future fishing adventures.
