On June 1st, 2013, the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex (LINWRC) hosted its annual large event at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley, New York. As a proud part of the Second Annual Tri-Hamlet Community Celebration Day, a local event sponsored by New York State Senator Lee Zeldin, LINWRC cohosted International Migratory Bird Day and New York State’s Central Pine Barrens Commission’s Pine Barrens Discovery Day. With beautiful clear weather the entire day the event was well received with a total of 790 visitors enjoying the varying activities and program offered. A total of 20 exhibitors, 11 informational Fun Shops, three guided hikes, volunteer guided canoeing, bird feeder building, and an open archery range provided the public with diverse opportunities for learning about the National Wildlife Refuge System, their local environment, and the Central Pine Barrens. A special thanks goes to the Friends Of Wertheim, the refuge’s non-profit friends group, for helping nearly 80 people build oriole bird feeders and to the Long Island Paddlers who ran a successful open canoeing experience despite the occasional heavy wind. This was also the debut of the newly acquired archery equipment, provided by the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service, with over 150 people participating and enjoying the archery range. This event would not have been possible were it not for the dedication of 59 volunteers, 5 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff, 5 Central Pine Barrens Commission staff, and 3 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation staff.
