On a clear but chilly Saturday in mid April, 14 high school juniors and seniors from Congressman Frelinghuysen’s New Jersey 11th district were given a “behind the scenes” tour of Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The students, members of the congressman’s Youth Advisory Council, were greeted by Rep. Frelinghuysen and staff from his district office. Refuge Manager Bill Koch led the tour with assistance from Deputy Refuge Manager Steve Henry and Visitor Services Manager Jon Rosenberg. The program began with an introduction to Great Swamp and the National Wildlife Refuge System at the Refuge’s Helen C. Fenske Visitor Center. From there the group was given a guided tour of  the Refuge which highlighted habitat management and restoration activities, wildlife management programs, the first Wilderness Area in the Department of the Interior, public use opportunities, and ongoing cleanup efforts from Hurricane Sandy. The tour concluded  at the visitor center with farewells and invitations to return again to enjoy the refuge with family and friends.  Refuge staff was honored to host this tour for the fourth consecutive year and appreciates Rep. Frehlinghuysen’s strong support.
