Seventeen youth, who had been participating in the 2012 Refuge Junior Naturalist Program for the past seven months were presented their graduation pin in front of family and friends at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge's Discovery Center. The graduation ceremony included a short video or powerpoint presentation by each graduate. All seventeen youth completed the requirements of the program, including the participation in eight activities and two indepentent projects. Established in 2011, the program invites fourth and fifth graders, to participate in the program which introduces them to activities occurring on National Wildlife Refuges, wildlife and careers. This past year the youth assisted with The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge's 75th birthday. They participated in a number of hand's-on activities, working with refuge staff to learn about sea-turtle nest patrol and excation, creating interpretive trail videos, geocaching, invasive species moitoring, and prescribed burning. In addition, the youth received behind the scenes tours at the NOAA Turtle Research Center and Moody Gardens. fFor additional information visit www.juniornaturalist.org.
