On November 8, Richard Grimes, a realty specialist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Nevada Realty Field Office, received the prestigious Rudolph Dieffenbach Award. Presenting the award were realty chief Eric Alvarez and Pacific Southwest Region senior realty officer (and past Dieffenbach award winner) Stephen Dyer.

Grimes was recognized for his significant role in the $18 million acquisition of the 1,905-acre Hidden Valley parcel within the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex. His efforts resulted in the purchase of an important tract of land at risk from residential development. The acquisition was a complex process, involving The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, San Diego Association of Governments, California Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Rudolph Dieffenbach Award is presented annually for significant contributions to the Service’s land acquisition systems, operation or mission. Rudolph Dieffenbach retired from the Service in 1952 after a long and distinguished federal career of 44 years. Dieffenbach spent 27 years with the Service and the former Bureau of Biological Survey, one of its predecessor agencies. He was recognized by the Secretary of the Interior for his “outstanding accomplishments in the field of land acquisition,” among other things.
