Puddles the Blue Goose, the mascot for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, recently stopped at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge. The stop was perfectly timed to coincide with the refuge’s first time participation in the Very Merry MADISON Christmas Parade. The refuge staff and interns organized what turned out to be one of the best floats in the entire parade!

The theme for the float was the upcoming Christmas Bird Count, to be held at the refuge on December 15, trees were decorated with birds of all types and the float participants, including Puddles wore binoculars. The rest of the float was accented with grasses, garland and pretend snow. Parade day, the weather was a perfect 60 degrees and sunny. After the parade, Puddles waddled down the streets of downtown Madison where youngsters of all ages high-fived, waved and even received hugs from Puddles. Even Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped for a photo op.
