On a beautiful Saturday in mid-October, a dozen volunteers and staff spent the morning removing litter from roads that pass through the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Volunteers divided into four teams and carefully cleaned refuge roadways that were last picked up in spring. Several hundred pounds of trash were collected. Glass, plastic, metal, and paper were separated for recycling. This semi-annual event has greatly improved the appearance of roadways crossing the refuge. Less trash is found each outing as cleaner roadsides seem to discourage littering. Roadside clean-ups are one of many successful projects completed in partnership with the Friends of Great Swamp NWR.
