Annual Green Wing Day at Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Region 3, September 15, 2012

On Saturday Sept. 15, the Yellow Creek Chapter of Ducks Unlimited held the annual Greenwing Day at Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. More than 250 people participated and explored various outdoors related educational activities at the refuge. There were exhibits on duck decoy and blind placement, trapping in Missouri, how to use various duck and goose calls, duck identification challenges.

The Ducks Unlimited booth was popular with many of the kids where DU volunteers were handing out hats, pins and other DU gear. The stream box continued to be popular and the archery and skeet shooting booths were busy the whole day as kids learned how to properly fire a gun or bow. Upon checking in for the day, kids recieved a sign-off card with all the activities listed. Once they participated in all the activities the cards were checked off and they turned them in for a chance to win numerous door prizes during the duck calling contest at the end of the day.

The Swan Lake Sportsman’s Club generously provided hotdogs, hamburgers and chips for lunch to all who attended the event. The Duck Calling contest was a success with participants in three different age categories from age 3 to 18. The entire event went smoothly and people were there participating and exploring various activities from the minute it started until closing time.
