Bat Literature Takes Wing

Region 3, September 25, 2012

In 2011, the Bloomington, Indiana Field Office launched an online bat literature database to better manage and to increase accessibility to the rapidly growing number of bat-related reference materials. Over the past year, Service biologist and database administrator, Andy King, has added nearly 100 new items to the database, bringing the current total to over 1,250 reference materials.

While the literature in this database is heavily focused on the federally endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis; n=419 references), it covers topics that are germane to other bat species, particularly those in the eastern United States. Most of the resources in the database are scientific journal articles, but there are also theses, symposia/conference proceedings and abstracts, unpublished technical reports, PowerPoint presentations, posters, court decisions, websites and other materials. These materials can be queried by author, word search, or key words. Most of the references also include attached PDF files of the original documents. New materials are being added on a frequent basis and an RSS feed feature allows users to quickly view the most recently added items. Although the database is not available to the general public due to copyright issues and journal license agreements, all Service employees can gain access to the database via the “RefShare” link on the Service’s Region 3 Endangered Species Program website via Inside FWS (https://inside.fws.gov/go/post/R3TEBats).

To submit new bat literature/references please email electronic copies (e.g., PDF or Word docs.) of survey reports, presentations, court rulings, fact sheets, etc. to the following database administrators:
