On October 15, 2011, the Coleman National Fish Hatchery (NFH) will host the 21st Annual Return of the Salmon Festival from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This free family event celebrates the return of the fall Chinook salmon to the hatchery and promotes the efforts that natural resource agencies are doing to address fish, wildlife and habitat issues on local and national levels.

Along with the chance to meet mascot "Landon the Salmon", this year’s activities include: viewing of adult Chinook salmon and salmon spawning operations, the “Salmon Aquarium”, Native American activities, activities for children, recreational displays and a croquet game that mimics the Salmon lifecycle. In addition to those activities, approximately 50 additional exhibitors; including federal/state agencies and community organizations, will be participating at the festival this year.

The Coleman NFH is located on Battle Creek approximately five miles upstream from the confluence of Battle Creek and the Sacramento River The hatchery was constructed in 1942 as part of the mitigation measures to help preserve significant runs of Chinook salmon threatened by the loss of natural spawning areas resulting from the construction of Shasta and Keswick dams on the upper Sacramento River. The Return of Salmon Festival is held on the third Saturday in October.
