Staff from the Coleman and Livingston Stone National Fish Hatcheries recognized the efforts and contributions of hatchery volunteers during a luncheon December 4 in Redding, Calif.  Volunteers were presented with certificates and tokens of appreciation for their hard work and dedication.  Glenn Larson, one of the original members of the volunteer group, was presented with a plaque that will be displayed at Coleman NFH in recognition of his 8 years of service with the program.

The volunteer program was initiated in 2001 to enhance the experience of visitors and school groups that tour the hatchery during fall Chinook salmon spawning operations. Volunteers provide guided tours and technical information about the hatchery that helps educate the public about all aspects of hatchery operations.

The volunteer program at the hatcheries has growing from a small group of three to its current size of 24 volunteers.  During 2009, volunteers logged over 840 hours guiding 185 tour groups from 61 different schools.  Prior to the formation of the volunteer group there was no program in place to provide structural information to the thousands of school children that visit the facility annually.

Coleman National Fish Hatchery is located in Anderson California on Battle Creek, a tributary of the Sacramento River.  The hatchery is open for self-guided tours seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to dusk.  During the months of October and November guided tours are available for groups on spawning days.  For more information, or to schedule a tour please contact the hatchery at (530) 365-8622 or visit our website at http://www.fws.gov/coleman/
