On May 22, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) staff from the Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge Complex (NWRC) and California Condor Recovery Program (Recovery Program) attended the grand opening of the new “Elephant Odyssey” exhibit at the San Diego Zoo.  The new Elephant Odyssey includes a California Condor exhibit, allowing the public to see condors at the Zoo for the first time.

Three California Condors are on display in the new aviary created as part of an ambitious new elephant exhibit.  Elephant Odyssey covers 7.5 acres, with 34 species of animals and 11 different animal habitats, including the 2.5-acre elephant area.  The exhibits theme is connecting animals of today with their ancestors that roamed Southern California 12,000 years ago.  The San Diego Zoo condor exhibit is one of only four public exhibits in the world to display condors, joining the San Diego Wild Animal Park, Santa Barbara Zoo, and Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City.
