Over 700 people came out to the Chula Vista Nature Center on Saturday October 18th to celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week.  In partnership with the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the Nature Center opened its doors for a one-day, free admission event that had something for everyone.

Performances by Running Grunion and Rat Pack Frank engaged the kids while teaching them important conservation messages.  Volunteers walked around with education birds providing individuals the opportunity to get up close to a great horned owl or a red-tailed hawk.  Being able to touch a sting ray was a highlight for the girls in Troop 313.  “They are slimy and feel like a rubber band” was what 10 year old Mary had to say as she pulled her arm out of the water.

Exhibits sponsored by San Diego Audubon, San Diego Unified Port District, Friends of San Diego Refuges and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Inspector Office provided children with hands activities that taught them about their local watershed, California least tern survival and the importance of protecting wildlife. The San Diego National Wildlife Refuge fire crew performed a hose lay and showed the fire truck to wide eyed children.

It was a fun filled exciting day for everyone who attended.  This is the second year of the celebration and one that will hopefully continue for many years.
