The Friends of the St. Croix Wetland Management District, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources partnered to develop an Auto Tour Birding Guide of the St. Croix WMD. The guide was funded through a National Fish and Wildife Foundation grant and highlights some of the local history and birds of 16 Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA) and State Wildlife Areas (SWA) located in St. Croix, Dunn and Polk Counties. In addition to directions to the sites, the guide lists some of the common bird species found on these public lands.

The guide is a useful tool for telling the Friends story, as well as letting people know how to enjoy their public lands. According to District Manager Tom Kerr, "the Friends are very actively involved in educating the local community about natural resources." Wildlife Biologist Chris Trosen helped develop the tour guide with the partners. According to Trosen, "this guide was a great example of local partners pulling together to promote the importance of these public lands for many species of non-game birds."

The guide helps promote the St. Croix WMD's goal of restoring the prairie, wetlands and oak savanna historically found in this area. The guide also encourages involvement in conservation, either by spending a day on your public lands, joining the Friends or purchasing a federal duck stamp.
