The Service is Celebrating Endangered Species Day: May 15, 2009
- The Endangered Species Act is one of the most powerful environmental laws in history and has successfully saved 99% of those species that have received its protection from extinction.
- In 2006, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California introduced a Senate resolution encouraging the people of the United States to: “…become educated about, and aware of threats to species, success stories in species recovery, and opportunities to promote species conservation worldwide...”
This year, Endangered Species Day is the third Friday of May, May 15th.
- Endangered Species Day is an opportunity to learn more about the threatened and endangered species in our country and the efforts being made to save them.
- Endangered Species Day is also an occasion to celebrate our nation’s conservation legacy, an ongoing commitment to the preservation of the incredible diversity of life within our borders.
- And, Endangered Species Day is a reminder that there are a variety of actions that each of us can take everyday to help protect not only our nation’s imperiled wildlife, fish, and plants, but all of our shared natural heritage.
- For the US Fish and Wildlife Service, this is Dave Harrelson.
